When should physicians practice off-label prescribing, if at all? That’s the question at the heart of Dr. Syed Ali’s recently published article in the July 2012 issue of Current Psychiatry.

Citing extensive research, Dr. Ali and co-author Dr. Saira R. Ajmal offer a primer on when it is appropriate for psychiatrists to prescribe medications in a manner different from that approved by the FDA, otherwise known as off-label prescribing. Physicians should take caution when considering the off-label route, by weighing the potential risks and benefits on an individual case by case basis.
